BLUE FORESTER ON THE LEFT - RED OUTBACK ON THE RIGHT
Customers often ask "What is the difference between a Forester and an Outback?"
We will answer that question in parts - but first let's focus on what they have in common: All Subaru's have standard features in common - AWD, VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) anti-lock brakes, airbags, air conditioning, keyless entry, power windows and doors, cruise control and many others.
LOOKS
Customers have different opinions and personal preferences when it comes to image perception. Some say they like the Outback but that the Forester looks more like a Sport Utility instead of a wagon. The Outback has a lower profile (with about 3 inches less headroom) but has a different (sport-like) driving experience than the Forester.
TRANSMISSION
Automatic: The Forester uses a four speed transmission. From 2010 forward the 4 cylinder Outback uses a CVT (continuously variable transmission) that gives it a two mile per gallon advantage in fuel economy, even though it is a little heavier than the Forester.
Manual: The Outback uses a six speed manual transmission; the Forester uses a five speed.
ENGINES
Both vehicles have the same standard 2.5 liter 4 cylinder boxer engine with 170 horsepower. The Outback is available in a 3.6 liter five speed automatic transmission and the Forester is available with a turbocharged 2.5 liter engine with a four speed transmission.
FUEL ECONOMY
The Outback gets 22/29 with the 2.5 liter engine with CVT transmission and the Forester gets 21/27 with the four speed automatic transmission.
